Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. It pulled me in in the first 3 pages and I could barely put it down.

So I've read a lot besides book club books lately -

I've almost finished the published books in the Outlander series (one more and then the one due out in Sept 09)

I've started in "Lord John" series by her as well - which I have also enjoyed - please note they have gay sex (no worse then anything we've read for bookclub.) they are interesting reads ... Tied into the Outlander Series as they are about Lord John Grey and feature much more of a british military angle.

Sword Dancer - a fantasy novel in the tradition of Marion Zimmer Bradley - woman warrior who is trying to find and save her younger brother, who was captured and sold into slavery.

I just finished this series too (and already have a hold on Echo in the Bone from the library)! Really enjoyed it.

I just finished "Into the Wilderness", which includes a cameo by Ian Murray, Clare and Jamie!. Kind of neat to see them pop up in another book. "Into the Wilderness" is set in the Adirondacks in the late 1700s and I love reading books where I know the places mentioned.

I would highly recommend "The Help". One of my favorite reads this year.

It's been a while since I've read it (during college, not childhood) but if you like fantasy series I would recommend the Recluce series L. E. Modesitt Jr. It's all about Order vs Chaos (there's a bit of a sci-fi twist, it's a very minor plot point that two fighting alien races land on a planet, and their technology and viewpoints basically turn into magic while they revert into your typical medieval magic society).

Also, the Sword of Truth book series was indeed made into a tv series which I've been enjoying although I've missed the last few. It's called Legend of the Seeker, I believe. The main dude is pretty yummy, and the women are all hot in bosomy dresses for any men interested. :-P

They make a cameo in someone else's book??? I don't know how I feel about that.

I can't wait for Echo, although I plan to buy it for my Kindle rather than wait at the library

In terms of what I'm reading now, they have generally not yet been published (or may never be)

But I would like to recommend "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry as a fantastic summer read that I would be reading again now if it wasn't for all the reading I have to do for work. I can lend it (and the VHS version) to anyone interested. You won't be sorry.

I've just finished a bunch of library reads and one "bargain" (hardcover for $1.99)

The Bargain was "The Widow of the South" historic fiction based on one real life woman who's life was so altered by the civil war she became the keeper and mourner for the many who died at the battle of Franklin. Really interesting read, well if you like historic fiction.

"Dawn on a distant shore" and "Lake in the clouds" by Sara Donati were both good, fast reads and a continuation of the "Into the Wilderness" series. It's fun reading about upstate NY.

"In the President's Secret service : behind the scenes with agents in the line of fire and the Presidents they protect" by Ronald Kessler - was another interesting look inside the Secret Service ... not sure I believe all of the 'inside story' 100% but I enjoyed it just the same.

Finished Echo in the Bone and a bunch of books on MBPTI and it's application.

And Thunderstuck.

Waiting for the next book club book to arrive in the library (lots of holds on it) and waiting for a reserved copy of American Wife.

What is everyone else reading? any good recommendations?

We'll have to talk about Echo in the Bone! I also read An American Wife this year (overall I liked it).

I finished up the Sookie Stackhouse series (how nice to read quick books after the Outlander series) and have about 50 pages left in Queen of the Swords (I think Sara Donati has another book coming out in January/February?). I've enjoyed the series.

Up next I have a Malcom Gladwell book (author of The Tipping Point, Outliers, and Blink) and Lit (Mary Karr who wrote the Liars Club -- great book). Superfreakonomics came to the library for me, but the day I was going to pick it up was the snow storm and I didn't make it. Had to put another hold on it.

I can't remember -- have you read "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett? One of my favorite books this year. If you liked "The Thirteenth Tale" we read last year, you'd probably like "The Forgotten Garden" - another one I liked.

Just finished The American Wife - good read, overall I liked it also.

Tim borrowed "Legs: A Novel" by William Kennedy, from the Library, and one night I found myself without something to read ... and since it was about Catskills, gangsters & Albany I found myself reading it. It was good, a little graphic at times - not really surprising, given the topic - but overall a good quick read.

Finally got Superfreakonomics from the Library - read that and I am interested in hearing what everyone will have to discuss on this one. I think the potential for discussion is very good.

Thanks Kathy for the recommendations ... I'll try "the Help", next time I order something from the Library. I just got Art of racing in the rain, so that's the next one on deck.

Then I think I'll hunt down some sort of fantasy/sci fi novel, since it's been ages since I've read any.

I just got it from the library too and read the first chapter last night. If the lengthy discussion we had at work regarding prostitutes is any indication, I think it will be a fruitful book club discussion.

I've read a bunch of things since my last post ...

I re-read the fantasy novels that started it all ... my love of fantasy anyway robin Mckinley's "The Blue Sword" and "The Hero and the Crown"

I read all of the "Magik" series books.

"The Lovely Bones"

Is The Lovely Bones what the recent movie was based on? How was it?

The Lovely Bones was the very first book club book.

I loved The Hero and the Crown and the Blue Sword when I read them. I liked Hero better then Sword.

Hero is much better story. wish there was a real sequel to it.

I liked the lovely bones. It was an interesting perspective on a typical murder-mystery. Being told from the POV of the deceased that is.

I'm also reading a Biography of Mae West

Technically Hero is a prequel - The Blue Sword came out first - which is probably why Hero and The Crown is better.
