To the point
- We usually meet every month (not December)
- We usually meet on Wednesdays (sometimes Tuesday)
- We usually meet the last week of the month
- We usually meet at 7:00PM (sometimes earlier)
- We usually have pizza (sometimes we do something nicer)
- Pizza is priced at $1/slice
- Drinks are provided by a generous volunteer
I would ask that if you are interested, please send me (John) an e-mail saying so. I send a few messages each month with updates (that are largely reflected here on the web site), but I also request various pieces of information, like who will be attending the meeting and who will be eating pizza. I do need a fairly accurate count of people who will be at any given meeting, and I definitely need to know how much pizza to buy. It's unlikely that I wouldn't let you in if you showed up unannounced, but space might be an issue.

The FAQ (pronounced fack)
How do I join the book club?
Very easy. You e-mail John and you'll be on the official mailing list. Please make sure John expects you at a meeting. We'd hate for there to be no room for you.
How often does the book club meet?
We meet approximately once a month, except for December. Due to holidays and vacations, it is our custom to skip December entirely and just hold a massive, two-month Decanuary meeting at the end of January. Depending on how a month falls, we may have four or five weeks between meetings. We're flexible.
Where are meetings held?
The meeting location varies. If your home is large enough to handle 10-20 people, you could host a meeting. We try to keep things as close to Poughkeepsie as possible. The first couple meetings were held in the southern regions of Wappingers Falls. We've gone as far north as Port Ewen. We've stabilized a bit on John's magnificent Fortress of Solitude just over the Mid-Hudson Bridge in Highland.
How do I find the meeting site?
Assuming that you are on the mailing list, a map and directions are part of the final e-mail before the meeting. Directions should also be available on the main page as the next meeting approaches.
Should I eat before I come?
Only if you want to. With the exception of our Christmas Spectacular last year, we always have pizza. And people frequently bring other goodies. Remember, you won't get pizza if you don't tell John that you want it.
What happens if I don't finish the book?
A number of persons who didn't finish (or read any part of, for that matter) the book have gone on to lead full, productive lives. The worst thing about this situation is that the plot will probably be revealed to you. You are welcome and encouraged to come in any event. Have some pizza and shoot the breeze.
What books have been read by the book club?
The complete list is available via the Our books link in the nav bar. They are all linked directly to Amazon so you can get the scoop on them or buy them. And remember, if you buy them through our link, the book club gets a few cents back.
What books is the book club planning to read?
Who knows what the future holds? We know what book we're reading a full month ahead of time. Beyond that, it's a crap shoot. I recommend browsing the past book nominations in the forum.
How are books chosen each month?
A day or two before each meeting, an e-mail is sent out that, among other things, asks people to send nominations for books to be voted for. Remember, the voting is for the second-to-next book. The book that we'll be starting immediately after a meeting was voted for at the previous meeting. In any event, at the start of each meeting, the nominations are announced and everyone votes for their favorite book. Occasionally, the voting is shaken up a bit and handled by e-mail, allowing everyone on the mailing list to vote.
